PROFESSIONAL LEVEL ACT DEVELOPMENT
PROFESSIONAL LEVEL ACT DEVELOPMENT
PROFESSIONAL LEVEL ACT DEVELOPMENT
This online act development class is designed for working burlesque artists who would like to develop a new solo act in a supportive, respectful, and encouraging workshop.
(The less fancy description of this class: Do you need some honest feedback and a little accountability to get a new act finished? I’ve got you!)
This class runs Saturdays 1-3pm EST for four consecutive weeks from Sept 28-Oct 19, and we will meet on Zoom (so people from EVERYWHERE are welcome!)
Jezebel will be discussing some best practices for choreography, based on her education and experience as a professional choreographer, and her decades within the burlesque industry. Jez will be offering individual feedback to each student, but Input from our peer group will also be very important, so Jez will also facilitate group feedback within class, and students will have access to recordings of our discussions of their act.
This class will help you become a more skilled choreographer, because in addition to experimenting with different strategies for movement and problem-solving, students have the unique benefit of getting to see many other acts created in real time, and they are invited to think through the choices they would make if this was their own work. We get to 'practice' making decisions about a bunch of acts at once, and this helps us hone our aesthetics and develop choreo skills while we are also benefitting from the wisdom of other seasoned professionals.
Each student’s style and aesthetic will be honored and respected within class and during our feedback, and the goal of this class is not to encourage you to make ‘marketable’ or 'easy' work, but to support you as you create new work which is most genuine to your vision.
Students will be asked to show work in class at several points throughout our four week workshop and provide feedback and resource recommendations to other students where appropriate.
Please register for this class only if ALL of the following apply to you:
-you have participated in 10 or more professional burlesque shows as a solo artist
-you have created at least 3 solo burlesque acts that you have performed for an audience
-you have the intention to attend all 4 classes (I know that working artists are busy, but this class is a collaborative workshop, so your cohort is counting on you, and as a result, attendance is important)
-you feel confident in your ability to give and receive feedback appropriately in a small group setting. (This might look like: sharing constructive feedback kindly, being able to listen to and graciously absorb input on your own acts, feeling excitement about supporting the creation of acts that are not in your most familiar/favorite burlesque style, or being aware of classroom and interpersonal dynamics so that everyone has a chance to be seen, heard and supported.)
This class has limited registration - it will not run with less than five participants, and it is capped at ten.
